Just over nine years ago, Bodie chose me. He was the first of four puppies. I caught him as Fly, confused by the whole labour process and frightened by what was happening, ran away and hid under my bed. I wiped him down and, with some soft reassurance, attached him to Fly for a short feed before the rest of the litter arrived.
These two dogs, clever, brilliant, loyal and independent Border Collies, have been with me through all times. But their hearts beat faster. They are constantly on the move, warmer by a whole degree, and we know this when we make a contract with them. To care for them, treating them with kindness and love, reaps glorious rewards. But we also know, and somehow ignore, that they will expire before us. This will never be okay.
