I’ve recently been recalling my adventures and involvement in club culture through the late 1980’s and 1990’s. As a patron, club organizer and as a long practicing VJ, I followed and supported movements in youth led audio visual culture in techno clubs and latterly with Drum’n’bass music, specifically but not exclusive to, a night that ran for 6 years called livevevil at Glasgow School of Art, and various other venues. I practiced VJing at the Sub Club, Drop Beats not Bombs in Birmingham, and at the Big Chill in Herefordshire. And I think it’s important to note that I met and worked with many hugely talented musicians and visual artists along the way – too many to mention here.
That notwithstanding, I’ve recently found significant pleasure in recreating the urgency of club posters using gel printing. I’ve presented a few here, but I’ve experimented with many forms and colors along the way. The most immediate, I’ve found are the high contrast yellow and black compositions using crosses and chevrons or parallel diagonal stripes, with compositions positioned on a grid being, I think, the most successful.
