Images of Research

Welsby recently collaborated with a local historian and alcohol researcher from the University of Strathclyde, Ms. Thora Hands, to imagine scenes of Victorian women drinking in a public bar. The research asked if Victorian drinkers were so very different from the drinkers of today? What can their experiences tell us about present day concerns with alcohol consumption? These images helped Ms. Hands step into the Victorian pub to examine the social and cultural context of drinking, by looking beyond studies of temperance and alcoholism to consider what alcohol meant to 'normal' consumers. Like us the Victorians had a complex relationship with drink and these images offered Ms. Hands deeper insights into historical and contemporary issues concering alcohol consuption.
